St. Mary's Island

One of my favourite walks is around St. Mary's Island, a housing development in Chatham Dockyard. The walk is easy and the views over the River Medway are stunning.

You can park in the Dockside Outlet Centre and walk across the road bridge to the Island however when across the bridge you go through the gate down to the boardwalk which runs around the Middle basin (Picture 1), at the end of the boardwalk you go through another gate and up onto the banks that protect that side of the island and onto Finsborough Ness Slipway where the footpath round the Island starts.

From there you can walk round the entire Island to the Lock Gates which allow the pleasure craft into the Inner Harbour, then across the bridge into the shopping area where you can reward yourself a treat at the Downunder Cafe inside.
